Stiff joints hinder people from exercising and staying fit, but yoga is a good way to reduce stiffness and help increase your desire to exercise. Stiffness is caused from being in the wrong position for too long to having some form of arthritis. Arthritis is painful swelling and stiffness of the joints. The term arthritis encompasses over 100 types of conditions and diseases, but is mainly used in reference to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis. Occasional stiffness, and arthritis, are alleviated with stretching so a lifestyle change that includes yoga poses can help. Idea Health and Fitness Association recommends three poses for seniors with arthritis; however, these same poses are the best beginner yoga poses for anyone with stiff joints. Whether you're at your desk for too long, or you have arthritis, give the bound angle, moving cat or tree pose a try. The bound angle pose - Baddha Konasana Baddha konasana, or bound angle pose, is a seated yoga pose that helps increase space within the joints, and helps relieve a multitude of issues including menstrual discomfort and sciatica. The bound angle pose can be performed in your home, in a yoga class and even in your work place. If you are unfamiliar with this pose it is similar to a butterfly stretch. Moving Cat Pose - Bidalasan Vinyasa Is your lower back stiff? What about your hips? Try the moving cat pose to help stretch, and loosen your spine and hips by extending and flexing them while on your hands and knees. Begin this yoga pose on your hands directly beneath your shoulders and your knees directly beneath your hips; preferably on soft flooring or a yoga mat. When you've accustomed yourself to the moving cat pose try a series of moving cat poses. Tree Pose also - Vrksasana There are many benefits to the tree pose such creating awareness of the body's midline, as well as strengthen surrounding ligaments and tissues. The tree pose is a standing pose, and although it helps reduce stiff joints, your initial focus starts with your feet since these are your "roots." Until you build your balance you can do the tree pose against the wall, and later move to the center of a room. Benefits of adding yoga poses to your activities Yoga poses promote full range of motions in movements, as well as reduces stiffness. They also help restore flexibility, which is often lost with stiff joints. Stiff joints perpetuate a stress-pain cycle, and beginner yoga poses such as the moving cat, tree and bound angle can reduce it. How? Chronic muscle tension creates stress which creates pain. Pain creates more muscle tension which is common in arthritis sufferers. Besides these positive health benefits these beginner yoga poses improve circulation to the joints.

For example, tell a new mom to take a nap because she's tired, and she'll clean the house instead because it is her only free time. Ask a career woman to put off a business meeting for her gynecology exam, and which do you think will get moved first? Heart disease is the number one killer of women Women are busy with the roles of mother, caretaker, friend, mentor, chauffeur, business colleague, entrepreneur and so on. With the daily activities preventative health measures are minimized or excluded, and that includes heart disease which can lead to heart attacks. Heart disease is a significant health problem and the number one killer of women in the United States, which surpasses cancer. This "number one killer" has some unusual symptoms in women, causing it to go unnoticed, or untreated until a heart attack occurs. Unusual heart attack symptoms that go ignored During my last CPR class, we held a discussion over the unusual symptoms of heart attacks in women. Several symptoms were different from men's, and completely ignored by women.
Will you know if you have these unusual heart attack symptoms? Many women know they are having health problems before a heart attack occurs due to the severity of the symptoms. As a matter of fact, a study funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), part of the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services found that "95% said they knew their symptoms were new or different a month or more before experiencing their Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)." Take preventative health measures before the heart attack symptoms occur Women should be aware of the symptoms, and take preventative health measures to maintain a healthy heart before heart attack symptoms occur. What does that mean? It means exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, know your blood pressure and keep it in check with regular health screenings, don't use tobacco products, and maintain a healthy weight. However, if you haven't taken any preventative measures until the symptoms occur, it's very important to visit your health care practitioner.
